Epproach Communications Provides Wireless Video Surveillance and Web Cam for the Town of Carolina Beach Skate Park
Epproach Communications the leading provider of Wireless Broadband Solutions and free Metro WiFi has recently installed a High Speed Wireless Network and Video Monitoring and Surveillance System for the Town of Carolina Beach. The Video System monitors the newly completed Skate Park. The Skate Park is a state of the art skate board park that is extremely popular with the youth and skaters of all ages in the area. The park is unattended and the town wants to make sure they were recording activities to deterred and detect any inappropriate or undesirable behavior. Plus, the town wants to publish the video stream to their Web Site to allow parents and other interested parties to remotely view the Skate Park online.
An immediate challenge was the fact that the Skate Park is located in a large recreational field that does not have any immediate access to the Town’s network or the Internet. The closest connection is located about a ½ mile away, across a busy highway, in the City Operations Office. Connecting to the camera with hard wires was impractical. Epproach configured a solution that utilizes outdoor broadband wireless radios transmitting in the 5 GHz frequency to link the Video feed from the Skate Park to the City Ops office. The Video Camera is an Axis IP Digital Video camera that connects directly to a Broadband Wireless radio. Both are mounted on a utility pole overlooking the Skate Park. This Radio broadcasts and connects to another Radio that acts as a relay point and ultimately connects to a third Radio located at the Ops Office. The Broadband Wireless Radios not only transmit the video but also broadcast a private, secure WiFi signal that allows City personnel to connect and view the Video feed from anywhere within the WiFi zone.

A Digital Video Recorder and Web Publishing Server are located at the Ops Office where it records the video for security surveillance and simultaneously transmits a stream to the Web.
“I was excited by this whole project.” says Scott McNeil, Epproach Communications chief wireless network engineer. “This is a great example of how fixed wireless can be integrated with video surveillance to benefit the community. They get high quality video at a remote site without the time and expense of running hard lines. It just makes sense.”
